LKV Annual statement 2017 - Gut Hülsenberg is top of the table again

Gut Hülsenberg brought in its first cut on 13 and 14 May. A prior analysis of fresh grass samples showed that the fresh grass contained sugar levels between 12 and 16% in dry matter – ideal conditions for applying the BONSILAGE FIT G silage additive. The young grass with about 35% DM was subsequently harvested and ensiled within 24 hours in excellent weather.

There had been rain three days before cutting, after an extended dry period, causing the delayed activation of previously applied nitrogen fertiliser, which plants had not yet fully used to build up crude protein. This resulted in the formation of nitrous gases during the first few days of ensiling, as was evident from the development of a fermentation gas bubble over the sealed silage. Nitrous gases are very effective preservatives and therefore unproblematic, though.
