This year’s Farmer’s Day of the Kreisbauernverband Segeberg (District Farmer’s Association Segeberg) was held at Gut Hülsenberg on 5th July 2019. Jens-Walter Bohnenkamp, Chairman of the Kreisbauernverband, welcomed over 300 guests and spoke about the current agricultural situation. He encouraged farmers to also try out new ideas. He personally has planted buckwheat and emmer this year in addition to his other crops.

The centrepiece of the Farmer’s Day was the presentation by Dr Mathias Herbst, Manager of the Zentrum für Agrarmeteorologische Forschung (Agrometeorological Research Centre) of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Weather Service). He explained that agriculture is contributing to climate change. While only 8 % of the carbon dioxide is thought to stem from agriculture, the proportion of methane and nitrous oxide from farming would be 60 % and 80 % respectively. Dr Herbst also explained recommended courses of action to lower the production of greenhouse gases. Long fallow periods between autumn and spring should be prevented through catch crop cultivation, which reduces the release of CO2. Arid fields should be well irrigated where possible so that more carbon can be stored in the plants. The expansion of agroforesty areas and broad beans as protein producers are measures that will tackle the problems.

Werner Schwarz, President of the Landesbauernverband (National Farmer’s Association) concluded with the words: “We are part of the problem, but we can also be part of the solution.”
