Drought leads to low yields
03.07.2018On 28 June, the second cut was brought in under perfect weather conditions. Fewer than 15 litres precipitation per square metre fell in Wahlstedt and its surroundings during the two-and-a-half months prior to harvesting. As a result, the yields were low in the majority of areas.
Furthermore, the crops had a low herbage but a high sugar content of over 15 % in the dry mass. Ensiling agents were imperative to protect this silage from secondary heating and mould formation. The silage was treated with a trial mixture of homofermentative and heterofermentative lactobacilli, which have a very powerful effect against yeast and moulds.
